EMI Surpasses Expectations, One More Class Planned For 2004

The second Executive Management Institute class for 2004 took place last month in Colorado Springs at the world-class Broadmoor Hotel. Participants were unanimous in praising the EMI and predicting that their attendance will benefit them both professionally and personally. The participants – who came from different regions of the country and who are owners, senior executives, and future leaders of electrical contracting firms with annual receipts ranging from $3 million to $60 million – were also unanimous in agreeing that their initial expectations for the week-long class were met or exceeded. On the first day, students said they hoped to learn to be more skilled and pro-active managers and to develop some financial expertise.

By the end of the Institute, they had explored six different subject areas that are the same criteria used to judge in the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce – executive vision and leadership, strategic management, financial analysis and management, process design and management, identifying and analyzing business opportunities, and measuring firm performance. Also woven throughout the course was discussion of Steven Covey’s best-seller The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

In addition, students took the op-portunity to discuss subjects not originally on the agenda but of interest to them, one of the most highly rated aspects of each EMI. Roundtable topics covered at this session included:

• Incentives and Rewards,

• Sales and Marketing,

• Estimating,

• Development of Standard Operating Procedures,

• How to Increase Market Share in Your Service Department,

• Design-Build,

• Office Staffing: Field vs. College Experience, and

• Purchasing Structure
